My teammates and I attended a meeting, our first meeting ever, this week with another company to discuss an upcoming event in which they had plans for us to showcase our first game. And although we were flattered at the opportunity, we kindly turned it down. Let's just say, the meeting did not turn out well by no fault of our own. The company that we encountered had members that were very unprofessional, disrespectful and did not treat us as another business coming into the meeting to talk but as children who was being punished.
I'm sharing this because even in this early of a stage, I know that what was encountered that night was NOT the way business is conducted. If you are going to dive into owning your own business, no matter what it may be, know that the key rule is to leave emotions at the door. Business, no matter how nice you are, is a cut throat atmosphere and you will have your good and your bad and you will come across a lot of the bad. But never, never let anyone bully you into doing something that you know is not right for you. In the end, you have to make the choice that's the right fit. Now you might make some enemies along the way but know that not everyone will conduct themselves in an unprofessional fashion.
On the other hand, try your best to be as professional as possible because in the long run, you will see that more and more of the good people will be more than happy to work with you for years and years to come. We managed to put that lesson into play that night and have cut ties with that company. But we know that another opportunity will be coming down the road.
